Christian street preacher David McConnell was arrested in 2021 in the United Kingdom when he dared to misgender Farrah Munir who identified as a woman but is in fact a man.
McConnell, however, had his conviction overturned last week when the Leeds Magistrates’ Court dropped his conviction which was to do 80 of community service and pay a 620 pound fine.
In order to explain McConnell’s situation, the Christian Legal Centre, which is representing him, put out a video to show the public the preacher’s dilemma.
“Yes, it is a first for me being arrested for so-called ‘misgendering’ someone,” McConnell said in the video. “It is absolutely worrying, Just because someone feels like a woman or they believe they’re a woman. If we simply say, ‘No, I don’t agree with you. I believe that you are a man.’ You can be arrested for that and prosecuted for that.”
McConnell has been street preaching across the UK for over 15 years where he has attempted to spread the gospel upon his conversion to Christ in 2006.
During one sermon on June 8, 2021, McConnell was approached by a male who identified as a ‘trans woman’ who questioned whether God accepted the LGBT community to which the preacher said that God could not accept ‘sin.’
McConnell also said that “homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God” and that “the Bible says lesbianism is an unnatural and vile passion,” as reported by Breitbart.
Following this interaction, he was repeatedly hassled for calling the questioner a “gentleman” which led to a massive crowd heckling and chanting “hate speech” at him.
The police eventually arrived on the scene and began to question the preacher and eventually arrested him. McConnell was charged and reported to the British government’s counter-terrorism watchdog, Prevent.
“It is completely unreasonable that I would be arrested, charged, and even prosecuted for speaking the truth that this man is a man while at the same time, you have people in the crowd who are threatening, throwing things at me, swearing at me, even stealing my amplifier in front of the police. And the police have done nothing about it,” the preacher said.
Following his arrest and charges being brought, McConnell and the Christian Legal Centre appealed the decision which led to its overturning.
The presiding judge on the case, Recorder Anthony Hawks, still defended the police’s actions, saying, “We live in a time when free speech is important and vital and we live in a time when people’s attitudes towards gender are very different from how they were years ago.”
“All these issues need to be properly respected, so I make no criticism whatsoever of the Crown bringing a prosecution in this case,” he added.
This is a worrying sign that freedom of speech is being threatened within the United Kingdom and with transgenderism running rampant in the United States as well, Americans can hope that their right to speak is not infringed like Mr. McConnell’s was.
