On Tuesday evening, CNN commentator and former special assistant to President George W. Bush Scott Jennings argued that Vice President Kamala Harris' unwillingness to do a solo interview brings into question her decision-making ability and shows that her team has a "lack of confidence" in her political ability. Jennings' comments come after CNN host Dana Bash landed the first interview with Vice President Harris and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) on Thursday at 9 PM EST after weeks of the Trump campaign pressuring the vice president to speak to the press and confront the various policy reversals she's made since launching her campaign.
"I have great confidence in Dana and CNN to do this. I think it's incredibly weak, weak sauce to show up with your running mate. The fact that they don't have enough confidence in her to let her sit herself, the actual top of the ticket, and do a single interview. In fact, I think the hand wringing and the gyrations over this over the past month show a troubling lack of confidence in her political ability."
"It makes you wonder as a voter, 'What kind of president would you be?'" Jennings added. "What does that look like for your decision-making process? I think Republicans are going to think it's pretty weak to show up, effectively, with someone who'll take up half the time."
The interview with Harris and Walz is expected to be taped during the day Thursday in Georgia, where the vice president will be participating in a bus tour to try to win the Peach State, according to The Hill. As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Harris's campaign advisors asked journalists in recent days about who she should be interviewed by as several networks lobby the campaign to be the first to get the exclusive interview with Harris after her unprecedented rise to become the party's nominee. While Harris set a strict deadline to get an interview "scheduled" before the end of the month, her campaign aides were debating the best path forward for a vice president who is prone to awkward moments in unscripted environments. The announcement on Tuesday solidified that the campaign thought CNN would be the most receptive outlet to shield Harris from an embarrassing moment.
Harris has largely stayed clear of interviews in recent years following an embarrassing encounter with NBC News host Lester Holt in 2021 when she infamously said that she'd "never been to Europe" when asked about whether she'd been to the border. Given this history, the campaign reportedly considered that Gov. Walz should do solo interviews but feared that he didn't know the specifics of his running mate's policy stances. The joint interview, however, would allow Walz and Harris to check one another throughout the interview to ensure they stay on message and avoid awkward moments.
