Earlier this week, CNN aired a segment focused on the various financial fraud scandals surrounding Gov. Tim Walz's (D-MN) administration, particularly during the COVID-19 Pandemic that saw one of the largest fraud schemes in the nation during his tenure. The damning report comes after the House Education and Workforce Committee subpoenaed the governor's office for documents related to the fraud scandal currently under federal investigation.
"I think Governor Walz, if you want to talk about accountability, has taken no accountability," Minnesota State Senator Mark Koran (R) explained to CNN. "He is the executive body in charge. Can you blame him individually for each individual thing? No. But he took absolutely no action to change the outcome. There was nobody that was terminated because of the failures of those agencies."
Another Republican lawmaker, Minnesota Republican Minority Leader Lisa Demuth (R), explained that a non-profit organization, Feeding Our Future (FOF), is at the center of the fraud scandal that has engulfed the state. "We have an issue of fraud here in the state of Minnesota, and we have half a billion dollars of known fraud during Governor Walz's time in office," she explained. "Governor Walz is responsible for the fraud that has been ongoing in the state of Minnesota. By not making any changes in his administration, then yes, it falls squarely on his shoulders."
"Feeding Our Future. A program overseen by Minnesota's Department of Education was the single largest COVID-19 fraud scheme in the nation," CNN reported. "According to the Department of Justice, nearly 250 million in federal tax dollars was supposed to go to feeding children in need. Instead, dozens of people involved in the scheme stole the money, buying houses, luxury cars, and a suburban bar and restaurant, according to a federal indictment. At the time, Governor Walz defended his administration." The state legislator's auditor found that the Minnesota Department of Education created opportunities for fraud by failing to act on warning sides and refusing to hold Feeding Our Future accountable.
The CNN report comes after House Education and Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) subpoenaed the governor's office for documents related to the scandal, which has already led to over a dozen convictions, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer. Despite requesting documents from the governor's office on multiple occasions, Chairwoman Foxx wrote in her letter to the governor that her committee has "been unable to obtain substantive responsive materials in the many voluntary requests." In addition to Gov. Walz being subpoenaed by Rep. Foxx, the committee also subpoenaed Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner Willie Jett, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and Department of Agriculture Inspector General Phyllis Fong.
The scandal, which involves the USDA-funded Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), focuses on the Minnesota-based non-profit organization Feeding Our Future (FOF) that the state government reimbursed for providing meals to children. Gov. Walz has admitted that the state government didn't do enough due diligence when reimbursing the organization but added that no state employees had been implicated in the scheme.
In a statement to Axios about the subpoena, a spokesman for Walz explained that they were grateful that the FBI is taking action to hold those accountable for the criminal activity. "This was an appalling abuse of a federal COVID-era program," the Walz spokesperson explained. "The state department of education worked diligently to stop the fraud, and we're grateful to the FBI for working with the department of education to arrest and charge the individuals involved."
