On Tuesday, Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) sat down with CNN ahead of the nation's first presidential primary in New Hampshire. The early morning interview comes on the day of the primary, which will see President Joe Biden face off in an unofficial Democrat primary as a write-in candidate with Phillips and Marianne Williamson on the ballot. During the interview, Phillips explained to the CNN anchors that his party was "completely delusional" thinking they could easily take on Donald Trump in November.
"The fact is we have a duopoly, a two-party system that is literally working against voters. Voters who don't want to show up and vote in primaries and then get frustrated with the choices that we have in November. That is part of the problem. We have a crisis of participation," the candidate said. Phillips is one of the few Democrats openly challenging Biden for the nomination, with New Hampshire being his first test to prove he is a viable candidate. According to recent polling, Phillips's ceiling of support is 32 percent in New Hampshire compared to Biden's 54 percent. It is also important to note that Democrats wishing to vote for the sitting president must write in Biden's name to do so because the Democratic National Committee pulled out of the primary following a disagreement on what state would go first in the primary process.
While Phillips is running a longshot campaign against Biden, he gave a dire warning to Democrats thinking they could defeat Trump. "I got to tell you guys; I went to a Donald Trump rally a couple of nights ago. I had never been to one. I had an event across the street. I saw the line of people waiting in the cold for hours, and I thought, what the heck? I'm going to be the leader who actually invites people, doesn't condemn them," he said. "I met probably 50 Trump people waiting in line. Every single one of them was thoughtful, hospitable, and friendly. All of them are so frustrated that they feel like nobody is listening to them but Donald Trump. A diverse crowd, people who had never been to a Trump event before. My party is completely delusional right now, and somebody had to wake us up, and if that's my job, so be it."
Phillips's assessment of the Democrat Party is likely correct given Trump's dominance of the polls in recent months against Joe Biden. According to the Real Clear Politics polling average, Trump has the support of 47.2 percent of the American people while Biden only has 44.3 percent, a 2.9 percent difference. With Trump all but guaranteed to be the Republican nominee this November, the 81-year-old Democrat is likely worried about his chances to win another four years in the White House.
