WATCH: DHS Secretary Mayorkas Gets Called Out On Live TV For Playing Politics With The Border

On Thursday morning, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas joined Tony Dokoupil on 'CBS This Morning' to discuss the ongoing crisis at the southern border and his lack of action as thousands of illegal migrants cross the US-Mexico border every day.

"Because of the standards at the border and the flow issue that Republicans have identified, Democratic leaders, mayors, and governors are struggling. Governor Abbott in Texas is busing people in different states who are showing up on doorsteps. They're in the streets, they can't work, they're hungry, they're begging, it's a big problem," Dokoupil prefaced before asking, "What is the White House willing to do to come to the aid of your fellow Democrats who say they need help?"

"So a few things. Number one, we have sought and received some funding from Congress to assist mayors and governors in addressing the migration challenge, but let me ask you a question: do you think it is responsible governance for one governor to refuse to coordinate, communicate, cooperate with other state officials around the country and just unilaterally bus people to another locality without informing the receiving locality so that we can work together to address a challenge that our country faces?" Mayorkas asked in response. "Is that the type of patriotism and governance that we expect of our officials?"

To this question, Dokoupil slammed Mayorkas for playing politics with the issue, saying, "I think that both parties are playing games and have been for decades on this issue, and you aren't talking about the fundamental point of contradiction. Republicans want a stop to the flow with very specific ideas. You aren't even talking about those ideas this morning, and so both sides are playing politics as they have been for a very long time."

While Mayorkas continues to obfuscate and shift blame for the border crisis from the Biden administration to Republican officials, record-breaking levels of migrants are surging to the border. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), agents at the southern border encountered over 300,000 migrants at the southern border for December, a record. December also saw the highest border crossings in a single day, with 12,000 on December 5.

Mayorkas's inability to recognize and address the problem has led to the announcement of the first impeachment hearing against him, which is scheduled for January 10. "For almost three years, the American people have demanded an end to the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border, and they have also rightly called for Congress to hold accountable those responsible," Republican Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) said in a statement. "That's why the House Committee on Homeland Security led a comprehensive investigation into the causes, costs, and consequences of this crisis. Our investigation made clear that this crisis finds its foundation in Secretary Mayorkas' decision-making and refusal to enforce the laws passed by Congress, and that his failure to fulfill his oath of office demands accountability."
