On Tuesday evening, NYPD stormed into Columbia University's Morningside campus to apprehend the anti-Israel demonstrators who have been occupying the institution for the past few weeks. Law enforcement's actions came after the agitators seized Hamilton Hall and barricaded themselves inside. Columbia gave the NYPD permission to intervene, leading to dozens of arrests, prompting presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump to call into Fox News to praise "New York City's finest."
When you look at New York in a state like this, but look at other cities. It's not a lot different. It's frankly worse in some places than it is right now in New York," Trump told Sean Hannity. "And I think New York City's Finest have been incredible, the way they walked in and climbed through that window. They were not afraid of anything. But it should have never gotten to this, and they should've done it a lot sooner than before they took over the building because it would have been a lot easier when they were in tents rather than a building."
Trump then tied the unrest on college campuses to a his broader anti-crime message that has been a pillar of his presidential campaign. "People have to respect law and order in this country," he said. "They don't respect it anymore. The United States, worldwide, is not respected anymore--and we have to gain back that respect from other countries quickly."
The 45th president also slammed President Biden for his lack of action on the issue of anti-Semitism. "It's just such a sad thing to see, Sean. When you look at this, it's not even believable. If you go back a year or three or four or five years ago, this would not even be possible to think about," Trump said, adding that a few lawmakers in Congress are fueling the anti-Israel sentiment seen more broadly. "Biden has to do something. Biden is supposed to be the voice of our country, but it's certainly not much of a voice. It's a voice that nobody has heard. Look, I don't think he's able to do it. I don't think he's got what it takes to do it, but he's got to. He's got to strengthen up, and he's got to be heard."
Amid the NYPD's siege of the building, President Biden was nowhere to be seen after the White House called a lid at 8:55 PM EST. Biden's failure to respond to the protest led Trump to write on Truth Social, "Where's SLEEPY JOE? He's SLEEPING, that's where!!!"
