WATCH: Donald Trump Says Ken Paxton Could Be The Next U.S. Attorney General - 'He's Very Talented'

During his visit to the Lone Star State on Sunday for the National Rifle Association (NRA) convention, presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump revealed that he is considering appointing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-TX) to run the Department of Justice as attorney general if he was elected to a second term in November.

When asked if he would consider Paxton for the post, Trump said, "I would actually. He's very, very talented. We have a lot of people who want that one and will be very good at it. But he's a very talented guy,"

"I fought for him when he had the difficulty, and we won," Trump said about the impeachment trial against Paxton led by Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R). "He had some people really after him, and I thought it was very unfair. He's been a good attorney general."

Trump took credit for ensuring that Paxton was not removed from office by the Texas Senate last year when he intervened and called on the Austin lawmakers to reject the rushed impeachment of one of the most successful Republican attorney generals in the country.

"Yes, it is true that my intervention through TRUTH SOCIAL saved Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton from going down at the hands of Democrats and some Republicans, headed by PAUL RINO (Ryan), Karl Rove, and others, almost all of whom came back to reason when confronted with the facts," Trump wrote on Truth Social following the impeachment in September. "Ken has been a great A.G., and now he can go back to work for the wonderful people of Texas. It was my honor to have helped correct this injustice!"

Trump and Paxton have had a strong relationship over the years, with Paxton launching various lawsuits following the 2020 election and Trump endorsing the Texas politician when he faced multiple primary challengers in 2022. Most recently, the Texas AG traveled to Manhattan to attend Trump's case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D). "With President Trump in NYC to sit through this sham of a trial," Paxton wrote on X. "This trial is a travesty of justice. I stand with Trump."

Attorney General Ken Paxton has proven to be a conservative fighter for the people of Texas and an advocate for America First policies as he fights back against the Biden administration in recent years. While his political future is yet to be determined, Americans across the country are watching his political career closely.
