On Monday, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed a bill into law that ends the Walt Disney Corporation’s self-governance over the Reedy Creek Improvement District that they’ve enjoyed since the 1960s.
“I signed legislation to end Disney’s self-governing status, placed the area in state receivership, and appointed 5 members to a state control board,” Gov. DeSantis announced on Twitter. “Disney no longer has its own government, will live under the same laws as everyone else and pay its debts and fair share of taxes.”
“Since the 1960s, they’ve enjoyed privileges unlike any company or individual in the state of Florida has ever enjoyed,” said DeSantis during a press conference, per Fox News. “They had exemptions from laws that everyone else had to follow. They were able to get huge amounts of benefits without paying their fair share of taxes.”
“How do you give one theme park its own government and then treat all of the other theme parks differently?” the governor questioned. “So we believe that that was not good policy. We believe that being joined at the hip with this one California-based company was not something that was justifiable or sustainable.”
“Today the corporate kingdom finally comes to an end. There’s a new sheriff in town and accountability will be the order of the day,” he added.

The bill, HB 98, will rename the Reedy Creek district to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District which will be staffed by five appointed, term-limited members, none of whom will be associated with Disney.
In addition, the bill will force Disney to adopt the Florida building code and the Florida fire prevention code.
The Walt Disney Company has, over the past year and a half, stumbled into a political spat with Gov. DeSantis and has promoted woke agendas in their media including the introduction of LGBTQ+ characters in their entertainment.
Disney has suffered tremendously for its political maneuverings with its stock price near its three-year low, the company recently announcing a cut of 7,000 jobs, and the company’s streaming service Disney+ reporting a loss of 2.4 million subscribers in the first quarter of the year, per Tech Crunch.
Governor DeSantis has taken bold action to dissuade one of the largest companies in the world from pushing woke agendas on audiences while punishing the company for speaking out against the Parental Rights in Education Act which banned LGBTQ+ content for children in third grade and under.
The governor’s bold agenda will prove to be good for the state of Florida and once again proves that DeSantis is one of the best governors in the nation.
