On Friday, Fox Business reporter Hillary Vaughn spoke with several House Democrats to ask if they were willing to tone down the rhetoric about 45th President Donald Trump following the two assassination attempts against him on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, and on September 15 at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Instead of retracting their statements about Trump, the lawmakers doubled down and condemned him as a "threat."
"I'd like to know if you think it's time for Democrats to stop calling Trump a threat to democracy?" Vaughn asked Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA). "No. The fact of the matter is that he is a threat to democracy," Rep. Johnson responded. The Fox Business reporter asked Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) the same, and she responded, "No, I think we should be clear that he is a threat to democracy." When asked if Democrat rhetoric should be turned down, Jayapal turned it back on Trump, "His rhetoric should be toned down, absolutely."
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) explained that there is no room for disagreement on Trump. "Listen, these are the facts. He is a threat. Period. Point blank," she said. The rhetoric from House Democrats echoes a similar statement made by former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton a day after the second attempted assassination of President Trump.
"The press is still not able to cover Trump the way that they should. They careen from one outrage to the next," Clinton explained to MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. "I don't understand why it is so difficult for the press to have a consistent narrative about how dangerous Trump is. You know, the late, great journalist Harry Evans once said that journalists should really try to achieve objectivity. And by that, he said, 'I mean, they should cover the object.' Well, the object, in this case, is Donald Trump. His demagoguery. His danger to our country and the world and stick with it."
Following the attempt on his life in West Palm Beach, Trump explained that the shooter likely believed the rhetoric of the Democratic Party that has called him a threat to democracy, a fascist, or portrayed him as America's Hitler. "He believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, and he acted on it," Trump explained to Fox News. "Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at when I am the one who is going to save the country, and they are the ones that are destroying the country — both from the inside and out."
President Trump then pointed to recent comments by the alleged "unity" candidates that cast him as a "threat" to the American system of government. "They are the opposite [of unity]. These are people that want to destroy our country," Trump stated. "It is called the enemy from within. They are the real threat."
"They do it with a combination of rhetoric and lawsuits they wrap me up in," Trump said. "These are the things that dangerous fools, like the shooter, listen to — that is the rhetoric they listen to, and the same with the first one."
