WATCH: JD Vance Recounts The Moment Trump Asked Him To Be His Vice President - 'I Had No Idea'

During a rally in Middletown, Ohio, on Monday, vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance (R-OH) revealed the phone conversation he had with 45th President Donald Trump when he was chosen to join the Republican nominee on the presidential ticket. Vance's visit to Middletown High School is his first campaign event following his nomination as the vice presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention.

"When President Trump asked me to be his running mate, I really had no idea what was coming," Vance told the crowd. The 39-year-old Ohioian said that Trump called him when he was with his family and asked him to review the Truth Social post that he would use to announce the selection. "But he did something that was really amazing afterward; he said, 'What do you think about this statement that I'm going to put out?' Of course, he put it out on social media. It's one of the things that I love about President Trump is that he speaks directly to people. He doesn't allow a bunch of consultants to filter him. He is what he is, and that's why a lot of us love him."

The Ohio senator explained that President Trump overheard his son, seven-year-old Ewan, during the phone call, and the Republican nominee insisted on speaking to him. "My son comes over to the phone, and the president hears him, and President Trump says, 'Who is that?' Well, that's my seven-year-old son. And he says, 'Well, put him on the phone.' And I'm like, 'Oh God.' Here it is. He's going to offer it and take it back, and my seven-year-old is going to say something really weird right now. And he reads off the statement, and he reads where he talks about my military service and my business background."

After reading the statement, the president asked Ewan's opinion about the statement, and the seven-year-old's endorsement was, according to Vance, the last thing he needed to make his running mate selection official. "The statement went out three minutes later," Vance told the crowd. "That is the kind of guy that Donald Trump is, and that's the guy that the media doesn't let you see. He actually cares about people's families. He cares about my family, but he cares about your family, too. He wants to believe that his generation left this country off in a better place than when they found it. That's why he's done this."
