WATCH: JD Vance Reveals Behind-The-Scenes Conversation With Trump Following Second Assassination Attempt - 'I Almost Couldn't Believe It'

On Tuesday, Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance (R-OH) held a campaign rally in Michigan as the campaign enters its final stretch and early voting begins in some battleground states. During the event, the Ohio senator revealed the conversation he had with President Trump following the second assassination attempt that occurred on Sunday at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

During a round of golf on Sunday, President Trump was tackled by the Secret Service after 58-year-old Ryan Routh was able to get within a few hundred yards of President Trump's location with an AK-14 rifle, a GoPro camera, and two backpacks. The would-be assassin was confronted by the Secret Service when one of the agents who was scouting the golf course saw the barrel of the weapon pointing out of a chain-link fence. Routh fled the scene after agents opened fire about 300 to 500 yards away from Trump. A witness photographed Routh's black Nissan license plate as he fled. The suspect was apprehended by authorities about 50 miles away, traveling north on I-95.

Following the ordeal, President Trump phoned his running mate to explain the situation. "We're sitting there, and I get a phone call. It says Donald J. Trump, so I answer it, and he says, 'JD, you won't believe it; they just tried to do it again.' I said, 'What did they try to do.' And he said, 'Well, they just tried to shoot me again,'" Vance recalled about his conversation with Trump on Sunday. "I almost couldn't believe it when he first told me. I said, 'Oh my god, sir. I'm so glad you're okay. You're physically okay, clearly, or you wouldn't be calling me. Are you okay in all the ways that matter? And he said, 'Yeah, I'm doing fine.' And that's just who he is. He just gets shot, almost shot for a second time, and he's totally fine."

Vance explained that while Trump was physically and mentally fine, the Ohio Republican explained that his running mate was annoyed that he couldn't complete his round of golf after being whisked away by the Secret Service. "He was mad because he was on the sixth hole, and he was about to make a birdie putt. And he said, 'I'm kind of pissed off they wouldn't let me finish my birdie putt. I was having the round of my life.' And I said, 'Well, okay, sir, but I think it made sense sure that they got you off the golf course.'"

"There is a difference in leadership style: There's a guy who takes a bullet to the head, stands up and says 'fight fight fight.' There's a guy who takes a second assassination attempt and responds to it with grace and good humor. And then there's a woman who's terrified of the American media," Vance added.
