WATCH: John Fetterman Struggles Through Committee Hearing After Two Months In Hospital – ‘Why Are They Putting Him Through This?’

On Wednesday, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) chaired a subcommittee hearing in the Senate to focus on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP. His opening statement showed a senator who was struggling to read the words on the page as his Senate colleagues awkwardly listened on.

The sad display returned to the Senate earlier this week in his customary gym shorts and hoodie after two months in the hospital being treated for depression.

As previously reported by the DC Enquirer in mid-February, Fetterman was checked in to be treated for depression likely caused by his isolation in Washington, D.C., and the difficulties he has had while attempting to adjust to working in the Senate with multiple cognitive handicaps.

“Last night, Senator John Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to receive treatment for clinical depression,” said Fetterman’s Chief of Staff Adam Jentleson at the time. “While John has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks.”

“On Monday, John was evaluated by Dr. Brian P. Monahan, the Attending Physician of the United States Congress,” he continued. “Yesterday, Dr. Monahan recommended inpatient care at Walter Reed. John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis. After examining John, the doctors at Walter Reed told us that John is getting the care he needs, and will soon be back to himself,” the chief of staff added.

Fetterman’s extended absence led to some Pennsylvanians calling for him to resign from his post, however, it seems like the Democrat is sticking to his plan to complete a full term.

In response to the now-viral clip of Fetterman’s opening statement, Twitter user ALX wrote, “Why are they putting him through this?”

It is clear that Fetterman is struggling to fulfill the duties of his job and his extended absence from the Senate chambers likely didn’t comfort his constituents.

Fetterman addressed Pennsylvanians on Tuesday, saying in a video posted to Twitter, “Hey everyone, it’s me, Senator John Fetterman and I just want you to know that I’m back and I’m feeling great, 100 percent. And, you know, during my time during the hospital the fringy fringies really came up with a conspiracy that I have a body double.”

“And I just want you to know that is just crazy. That is not true,” he said before being interrupted by another version of himself in the clip, clearly to make fun of the rumor.

Pennsylvanians are once again likely regretting their choice. Elections have consequences and Fetterman’s inability to serve his constituents the last two months likely makes the people of the Keystone State think twice if Fetterman is on the ballot again in 2028.
