On Tuesday evening, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) joined Fox News‘s Sean Hannity to discuss recent revelations uncovered by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) that the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has sent at least one undercover agent into Catholic churches.
The Weaponization of the Federal Government committee released a new statement on Monday that detailed the accusation, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer.
The committee has routinely requested information and documentation from the FBI for many months, however, the Bureau has been unresponsive and only provided limited documentation. Those documents, however, have led the committee, led by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), to determine that agents have been used to infiltrate Catholic churches.
“We now know the FBI, relying on information derived from at least one 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 employee, sought to use local religious organizations as ‘new avenues for tripwire and source development,’” the committee announced on Twitter.
The subpoena indicated that agents in Richmond, Virginia would engage in outreach with either leaders of local Catholic churches or Catholic congregations in order to assess “the warning signs of radicalization and to enlist their assistance to serve as suspicious activity tripwires.”
“This proposed outreach plan included contacting so-called ‘mainline Catholic parishes’ and the local ‘diocesan leadership,’” the committee explained. “The documents reveal that the FBI also expressed an interest in ‘leverag[ing] existing sources and/or initiat[ing] Type 5 Assessments to develop new sources with the placement and access’ to report on suspicious activity.”
In response to these revelations, Sen. Hawley joined Hannity to discuss the use of the federal government to go after churches in America.

“Senator, did the attorney general of the US just lie to you in that exchange, do we now know that?” Hannity said in regards to the questioning of Garland last month where Garland flatly denied the spying operation, claiming, “Our department protects all religions, all ideologies. It does not have any bias against any religion of any kind.”
“Sure looks like it, Sean. Sure looks like it. Listen, he knew at the time that he couldn’t answer the question because it looks so bad,” the Missouri senator said. “He knew that it looked beyond the pale and it is beyond the pale Sean for the FBI to go into any church in America and try to spy on Americans. And now we know that’s exactly what they are doing.”
“They are infiltrating churches. They are trying to spy on us. They regard churches apparently as the enemy and church-going Americans as akin to terrorists,” he explained, adding, “And yeah, the attorney general sat right there and told me ‘No, we don’t do that.’ And now we know they do in fact target churches and they have been.”
“There’s got to be accountability for this Sean. He’s got to be called on the carpet. The House needs to call him,” he emphasized. “The Senate needs to call him too but the Democrats will never do it. There’s got to be some accountability and the targeting of Christians and churches has got to end.”
Following the interview, Hawley wrote on Twitter that “this administration is treating Christians like criminals.”
