On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled a new Jamaican accent on "Late Night with Stephen Colbert," yet another instance of the Democratic candidate changing her speech patterns. Harris, whose father is Jamaican, seemed to slip into the accent only briefly before returning to her normal cadence.
"Have you no empathy, man?" Harris asked, clearly sounding different than normal. "No. For the, the suffering of other people. Have you no sense of purpose?" In response to the bizarre moment, the Trump campaign wrote on X, "It is simply impossible for Comrade Kamala to act like a normal human being."
The vice president has faced criticism in recent months for seemingly changing the way she speaks when speaking in front of crowds predominantly made up of African Americans or switching to a southern drawl. Critics have cited the multiple accents as showing the Democratic presidential candidate's inauthenticity and willingness to change her speech patterns to sway voters, much like her various policy flip-flops after taking over the ticket.
Last month, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) criticized Harris for a "phony" accent she unveiled at an event in Detroit, Michigan. "Kamala Harris is a phony who caters to whatever audience is in front of her," Vance said. "Earlier this week, she went down to Georgia and started talking with a fake Southern accent. Kamala Harris grew up in Canada. They don't talk like that in Vancouver or Quebec or wherever she came from."
The vice president also faced criticism after changing the way she speaks during a dinner with the Congressional Black Caucus last month. "Kamala Harris uses her 'Mammy' voice as she panders to the Black Community tonight," actor Sir Maejor wrote at the time. "She doesn't speak like this to Indian, Jewish, Hispanic nor the APPI [sic] community, why does she speak like this to us, this is insulting."
Vice President Harris has a clear authenticity problem, and the American people know it. While it is one thing that she regularly changes her speech patterns, it is a whole different problem that she seems to carry over that inauthenticity to her public policies. She has swiftly reversed her positions on banning fracking, an electric vehicle mandate, universal healthcare, border policy, police funding, and several other policies from her 2019 presidential run. With so many flip-flops and different instances of her changing her accent, the American people should be wary of trusting that she is being fully honest about her policy positions and true self.
