On Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris (D-CA) explained to '60 Minutes' host Bill Whitaker that President Biden is "very much alive" amid fears that the 80-year-old Democrat may suffer a health scare on the campaign trail in the coming year ahead of the 2024 election.
"We were talking to some Democratic donors, and they have told us that, should something befall President Biden, and he is not able to run, that there would be a free-for-all for who would run as president," Whitaker said. "You are in the spot that that would be a natural for you to step up. But we're hearing from donors that they would not naturally fall into line. Why is that?"
"First of all, I'm not going to engage in that hypothetical because Joe Biden is very much alive and running for re-election," Harris responded.
"But you do know," Whitaker interrupted. "I mean, that is a concern and a legitimate concern, I would say."
"I hear from a lot of different people a lot of different things. But let me just tell you, I'm focused on the job. I truly am. Our democracy is on the line, Bill. And I, frankly, in my head, do not have time for parlor games when we have a president who is running for re-election," Harris said. "That's it."
WATCH:
President Biden has already fallen multiple times during his presidency, causing many to speculate that the 2024 candidate could drop out for a younger alternative. That theory, however, seems to have lost steam as President Biden seems deadset on obtaining a second term in the White House. By the time he is inaugurated in January 2025, he will be 82 years old, and once he leaves the presidency in 2029, he will be 86.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal poll, 73 percent of voters agreed that the phrase "too old to run for president" fits Biden at least "somewhat well," with even Democrats agreeing with the assessment.
A recent Associated Press poll also found that 77 percent of Americans agreed that Biden was too old to effectively serve another four years at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Biden's age is becoming an increasing problem for Democrats as other candidates refuse to enter the race to challenge Biden. While Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) is the only candidate to have announced a run against the aging president, other potential Democrats like Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) have refused to challenge Biden ahead of 2024. Americans know the dangers of electing an octogenarian to the office, and Biden's age and lack of mental sharpness will likely hurt him significantly during the general election.
