After a shocking letter from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Deputy Director Patrick Lechleitner revealed that over 425,000 convicted criminals have been released into the United States, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy confronted White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the revelations. In her attempt to respond to the data, Jean-Pierre insinuated that the media were lying about the data, repeatedly claiming that it had been "fact-checked."
According to the letter, the ICE deputy director confirmed that over 425,000 known convicted criminals have been caught at the southern border and released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) into America. Among that figure are over 13,000 illegal immigrants convicted of homicide, over 15,000 for sexual assault, over 2,500 for kidnapping, over 10,000 for robbery, and over 62,000 for assault. There are also over 1,900 who have current pending homicide charges and over 4,200 non-citizens who have pending sexual assault charges.
The document, which is ICE's national non-detain docket, includes the hundreds of thousands of non-citizens who are currently roaming the country. In the letter, ICE explained that it evaluates whether to release a non-citizen into the country on a case-by-case basis. "ICE officers may use their discretion in making custody determinations and release non-citizens with conditions. ICE custody determinations are made on a case-by-case basis and take into account the individual case circumstances, primarily considering risk of flight, national security threat, and threat to public safety," the letter reads. "ICE takes other factors into consideration as well, including when a non-citizen has a serious medical condition, is the primary caregiver of minor children, or other humanitarian considerations."
Following the shocking report, Doocy confronted the White House press secretary, asking, "There are 13,000 people who have been convicted of murder who have crossed the border illegally and are living among us, so how much danger are US communities in right now?"
"I'm assuming you're talking about the ICE data? So, just a couple of things, and I think it's important to correct the record here. First of all, the false representation of the data I shared. That's what we are seeing, false representation. We've got to call that out. It's been fact-checked by some of your colleagues here and by multiple outlets that have debunked what has been falsely misrepresented here. So, we have to call that out."
"Can you clarify what the misrepresentation is?" Doocy asked. Karine Jean-Pierre responded by claiming that the numbers are being falsely represented. Instead of giving specifics, she pivoted by explaining that the number of removals this year has surpassed every previous year since 2010. "And if we are going to report something, a data that's out there, we have to do it in a way that's not confusing the American people and certainly not lying. This has been fact-checked."
According to CNN, the ICE data includes convicted criminals who have entered the country not just under the Biden-Harris administration but under any administration. The "non-detain" list also includes criminals, most of whom cannot be deported because their country of origin refuses to accept them, who are currently serving prison sentences.
