On Sunday, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), a fierce Trump critic and Republican vice chair of the January 6th Select Committee, told CNN's Jake Tapper on 'State of the Union' that she hasn't ruled out a 2024 independent presidential run to challenge 45th President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden for the White House. Cheney also claimed that Trump represents the "Putin wing of the Republican Party."
Cheney began the interview by advocating for Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) to advance the foreign aid bill for a vote on the House floor in order to ensure that Ukraine can continue to fight for "freedom" against Russia. She said that history would judge Johnson for his actions, mirroring a similar talking point used against the speaker by President Biden.
The CNN host then pointed out that Trump had yet to comment on the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in prison last week. Cheney argued that Trump represents the "Putin wing of the Republican Party" because the former president has repeatedly said that he would seek "retribution" against Democrats and the Washington bureaucracy if he is elected to another term in November. "The issue of this election cycle is making sure the Putin wing of the Republican Party does not take over the West Wing of the White House," she said.
The topic then turned to whether Cheney would run for the presidency to stop Trump. "You still haven't ruled out a presidential run of your own in 2024, as far as I know," Tapper said. "Are you still considering it, or what do you rule it out?"
"I haven't made any decisions about it yet. I'm going to do whatever is necessary to defeat Donald Trump," the former Wyoming representative said.
"But if it came down to you, not running, and it's Biden versus Trump, would you support Biden?" the host questioned, as reported by Breitbart.
I'm not going to make any announcements or endorsements this morning, but the most important thing is to defeat Donald Trump. And I'll do whatever, whatever it takes to do that," Cheney responded, adding that she will not be making any endorsements in the primary as former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) is set to face off against Trump in the South Carolina primary on February 24.
Cheney, who was brutally defeated by Rep. Harriet Hagerman (R-WY) in 2022, has loyally parrotted Democrat talking points against Trump to sabotage his campaign and ensure that Biden remains in the White House. Her repeated CNN appearances, however, aren't enough to stop Trump, and a direct challenge to the Republican frontrunner won't change any minds either.
