During an interview with Fox Business's Maria Bartiromo, former First Lady Melania Trump revealed her thoughts on the American Dream and what it means to her as an immigrant from Slovenia. The interview comes before the release of Melania's upcoming memoir, which seeks to give the American people a deep dive into her career and life.
When asked about her "incredible journey" that eventually landed her in the White House, Melania explained that the American Dream was what made it possible. "This country's incredible — the opportunities and free market, what is available to do. If you have a self-motivation and ideas, those ideas, they could come to life."
The former first lady's comments come just a few weeks before Americans head to the polls to decide if her husband will get another four years in the White House. However, Melania caught headlines last week when early copies of her book obtained by news outlets showed that the Republican candidate's wife supported access to abortion. Melania solidified that opinion with a video post on social media. "Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I safeguard," Melania said in the clip. "Without a doubt, there is no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women possess from birth. Individual freedom: What does 'my body, my choice' really mean?"
While President Trump has explained that he wants each state to decide whether abortion should be allowed or not, Melania was far more straightforward about her feelings on the social issue. "It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government," the former first lady allegedly wrote in her book. "Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman's fundamental right of individual liberty to her own life grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes. Restricting a woman's right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life."
When asked about her position by Bartiromo, Melania explained that her husband knew where she stood on the abortion issue. "[Donald Trump] knew my position and my beliefs since the day we met. And I believe in individual freedom. I want to decide what I want to do with my body. I think I don't want government in my personal business," she said.
Melania Trump's memoir is set to release on October 8. The memoir's description, found on melaniatrump.com, describes the book as a "powerful and inspiring story of a woman who has defined personal excellence, overcome adversity, and carved her own path. The former First Lady invites readers into her world, offering an intimate portrait of a woman who has lived an extraordinary life." According to the site, the book will include stories and images never seen by the public before. "Writing my memoir has been an amazing journey filled with emotional highs and lows," Melania explained to Fox News. "Each story shaped me into who I am today."
