On Sunday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador joined '60 Minutes' to discuss the influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border and the concessions that he requires to take action.
"With the ear of the White House, President López Obrador proposed his fix: that the United States commit $20 billion a year to poor countries in Latin American and the Caribbean, lift sanctions on Venezuela, end the Cuban embargo, and legalize millions of law-abiding Mexicans living in the US," '60 Minutes' reported. When asked what he would do if the US refused to take action on these priorities, AMLO said, "The flow of migrants will continue."
When presented with the idea that he was committed to "diplomatic blackmail," the Mexican president said he was "speaking frankly. We have to say things as they are. And I always say what I feel. I always say what I think." In response to the viral clip, various conservative commentators and lawmakers slammed the foreign leader for his remarks, with Texas Public Policy Foundation Executive Director Robert Henneke writing, "Failed narco-state despot attempts to extort America 🇺🇸. AMLO has done as much, if not more, to attack USA than Putin. To quote [Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX)], 'pound sand.'"
"We went from remain in Mexico to them making demands of us under threat of them flooding our country with more criminals and illegals. Mexico is not extorting us!!!!" Donald Trump Jr. wrote. "Welcome to Joe Biden's America, people… it doesn't have to be this way."
"Alternatively, the US ends all foreign aid to Latin American countries that enable the invasion of our country, we impose massive tariffs on Mexico, and put huge taxes on remittances to those countries," Ohio Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno wrote in response to the segment.
The Mexican president also denied that most of the fentanyl found in the United States doesn't come from Mexico despite both the DEA and the State Department providing evidence to the contrary. "They don't have all the information because fentanyl is also produced in the United States. Fentanyl is produced in the United States, Canada, and in Mexico. And the chemical precursors come from Asia," he said before attempting to shift blame. "Do you know why we don't have the drug consumption that you have in the United States? Because we celebrate our customs and traditions, and we don't have the problem of the disintegration of the family."
"Actually, the fentanyl epidemic in the United States rather than Mexico is because Mexico is a narcostate, and the Mexican drug cartels make their money by shipping fentanyl across the border, killing 100,000+ Americans," conservative commentator Ben Shapiro wrote in response to AMLO's claims.
The country of Mexico has long been under the control of Mexican drug cartels, and AMLO's lack of action on the southern border proves as much. The trafficking of both drugs and humans on the US-Mexico border is a multi-billion dollar industry for the cartels, and they will do anything to preserve it.
