On Friday, a letter sent to Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-TX) by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed that nearly half a million convicted criminals have been released into the United States as of July 2024. The letter comes as Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to visit the US-Mexico border in Douglas, Arizona
According to the document, the ICE director confirmed that over 425,000 known convicted criminals have been caught at the southern border and released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) into America. Among that figure are over 13,000 illegal immigrants convicted of homicide, over 15,000 for sexual assault, over 2,500 for kidnapping, over 10,000 for robbery, and over 62,000 for assault. There are also over 1,900 who have current pending homicide charges and over 4,200 non-citizens who have pending sexual assault charges.
The document, which is ICE's national non-detain docket, includes the hundreds of thousands of non-citizens who are currently roaming the country. In the letter, ICE explained that it evaluates whether to release a non-citizen into the country on a case-by-case basis. "ICE officers may use their discretion in making custody determinations and release noncitizens with conditions. ICE custody determinations are made on a case-by-case basis and take into account the individual case circumstances, primarily considering risk of flight, national security threat, and threat to public safety," the letter reads. "ICE takes other factors into consideration as well, including when a noncitizen has a serious medical condition, is the primary caregiver of minor children, or other humanitarian considerations."
The revelation of nearly half a million convicted criminals having been released into the country by the Biden-Harris administration comes as the vice president visits the border to make a case against her opponent, 45th President Donald Trump, and attempts to paint herself as being tough on the border despite her record.
"The American people deserve a president who cares more about border security than playing political games," Harris is expected to say, according to ABC News. "American sovereignty requires setting rules at the border and enforcing them." During her trip, Harris will be meeting with Border Patrol agents to tout recent pay raises that the administration has given to the men and women who guard the border.
President Trump responded to the letter sent by the ICE director, posting to Truth Social, "JUST OUT: 13,000 people convicted of murder have crossed into our Country through Kamala Harris' Open Border - NON DETAINED, NON CITIZEN, CONVICTED CRIMINALS! I've been saying this from the beginning of the Harris-Biden Administration, as soon as I learned they opened the Borders. Nobody who has allowed this to happen to our Country is fit to be President of the United States! Bad timing for her to show up to the Border today, after not going for four years. Why didn't she release these numbers earlier?"
