Fox News obtained new bodycam footage from President Donald Trump's assassination attempt on Thursday, showing the moment that the police confronted the gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, just before he shot eight bullets at the Republican nominee on July 13. A Secret Service counter-sniper team subsequently neutralized Crooks soon after he opened fire.
The footage takes place just minutes after Crooks has grazed President Trump's right ear, killed 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, and injured two other Trump supporters in the crowd. Officers can be seen surrounding the AGR International building where Crooks had set up to open fire on the rally, and the officer wearing the bodycam can be seen in the footage being hoisted up to peer over the edge of the roof before retreating after Crooks aimed his weapon at the policeman. The officer then quickly ran around the building as he attempted to warn other officers that an armed gunman was lying down on the roof.
The footage lacks sound within the first minute and a half, but the audio turns on as the officer prepares his weapon for a potential confrontation. "He's got glasses and long hair," the officer tells other law enforcement personnel. "F*cking this close, bro. Dude, he turned around on me," the officer said.
After the eight shots were fired and the Secret Service engaged the gunman, the officer's bodycam footage shows the heavily armed authorities surrounding the AGR building and attempting to scale to the top of the building, about eight feet high. "Before you, motherf*ckers, came up here, I popped my head up there like an idiot by myself, dude," the officer who first confronted Crooks said, per Fox News. "Then he turned around, and I f*cking dropped, and I started f*cking. I was calling out, bro, f*cking on top of the roof. F*cking we're not on the same frequency?"
The various security failures that took place in Butler, Pennsylvania that led to the attempt on Trump's life are being heavily investigated, and bodycam footage and video from the rally itself have been studied closely to see when Crooks was first visible by law enforcement. As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, footage from one of the victim's perspectives, James Copenhaver, showed Crooks moving on the roof just minutes before opening fire. The footage, taken at 6:08 PM just three minutes before Crooks shot at Trump at 6:11 PM, shows Crooks in two instances moving around on the sloped roof and peeking his head over the roof to see his target.
The newly released bodycam footage, coupled with footage from the rally and the congressional testimony from the Secret Service, paints a bleak picture of that day. The security failures that took place on July 13 almost led to the death of the Republican nominee and sadly resulted in the demise of a loving father. While investigations are ongoing, the footage shows the extent of the Secret Service's failure.
