On Thursday, newly elected far-left Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson joined ‘CBS Morning’ to discuss how he would lead the Windy City for the next four years.
A clip that went particularly viral was when the mayor suggested instituting wealth taxes in order to fix Chicago’s rampant crime problem thus insinuating that throwing more money at the problem will fix it.
“It sounds great on paper, but how do you pay for it?” asked the CBS host. “Chicago, as you know, is headed towards a major deficit in 2024. You say you’re not going to raise taxes but you have talked about other ways of raising money including property taxes.”
“Well I’m not going to raise property taxes,” he claimed. “That’s been the lazy form of governance for a very long time in the city of Chicago and quite frankly around the country.”
“The words that President Biden indicated in his Union address, he said that a teacher and a firefighter shouldn’t pay the same tax rate as the millionaire and billionaire,” the mayor-elect added.
“So Mr. Mayor-elect, you’re not going to raise property taxes but you will have to raise taxes?” the host asked.

“Well what we are going to have to do is to find the revenue from individuals who have the means to actually contribute to a safer city,” Johnson said, proving to the residents of Chicago who haven’t already moved away that they should start to seek greener pastures.
“Look the bottom line is this. 70 percent of large corporations in the state of Illinois did not pay a corporate tax,” he argued. “It’s that type of restraint on our budget that has caused the type of disinvestment that has led to poverty which of course has led to violence.”
After years of rising crime in the city of Chicago, it doesn’t seem like Johnson is willing to actually tackle the issues that are distressing the citizens of the Windy City. A reinvestment in the Chicago Police Department would surely make the city safer and lead to a better standard of living for residents, not new taxes.
It is likely that given Johnson’s announcement to raise taxes on corporations and individuals, those who haven’t already fled crime-ridden Chicago will do so and corporations will have no interest to headquarter in the city.
With Johnson set to take office on May 15th, the people of Chicago may actually look back fondly on the tenure of Lori Lightfoot.
