Ahead of the upcoming New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, CNN went on the ground to interview a number of supporters for former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley (R-SC), who is the only serious candidate remaining against leading Republican presidential candidate and 45th President Donald Trump after Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) dropped out on Sunday. During the interviews, several Haley supporters admitted that they would not back Trump if he was the Republican nominee in November, revealing the type of left-leaning voter that Haley attracts.
When asked about who he would vote for between President Joe Biden and Trump, New Hampshire voter Steve Grossman said, "That really puts me in a quandary. I frankly am more scared of another Trump term than another Biden term." Another voter, Rita McCabe, told the CNN reporter, "Well, I voted for him twice. I don't know if I can, in good conscience, vote for him again. I mean, he does things that we teach our children not to do." Claira Monier, another New Hampshire voter interviewed, said that she would probably vote for herself as a kind of protest, but if she had to vote, she would cast her ballot for Biden.
The Trump campaign has repeatedly pointed out that Haley is supported by a number of Democrat donors, and New Hampshire, which allows undeclared voters to cast their ballot in the Republican primary, is full of left-leaning voters who do not want to see Trump return to the White House. "Republican voters here in New Hampshire are realizing that Nikki Haley is more of a liberal than she is a conservative," Trump 2024 National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained on Fox News. "She was opposed to President Trump's border wall... she supports amnesty for illegal immigrants... Haley is also backed by Democrat donors."
While independent voters may try their best to get Haley across the finish line on Tuesday, it likely won't be enough to stop Donald Trump from obtaining the nomination as Republicans rally around the presumptive nominee. According to Five Thirty Eight, Trump has the support of 50.8 percent of voters in the Granite State, while Haley only has 36.6 percent support. On the national stage, Trump dominates Haley with 66.7 percent support compared to her 11.9 percent. Given these numbers, Haley could drop out after the New Hampshire primary in order to avoid an embarrassing defeat in her home state of South Carolina, where Trump enjoys over 60 percent support.
