On Monday, President Joe Biden traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, for a speech that he hopes is going to boost excitement in the black community for his reelection campaign, which began in earnest at the beginning of the year. Biden's speech, however, was interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters, which led to the elderly Democrat being visibly shocked as a potentially major problem for his reelection hopes took front and center.
"If you really care about the lives lost here, you should honor the lives lost and call for a ceasefire in Palestine," one of the protesters said before yelling, "Ceasefire now!" alongside multiple other demonstrators at President Biden. The 81-year-old president attempted to calm them down, but he was unsuccessful in doing so and instead was seen visibly shocked as the demonstrators were escorted out of the church. Biden then commented that he understands the "passion" around the issue and that he is working to limit the amount of suffering of civilians in the Gaza Strip, as reported by The New York Times.
President Biden spoke at the Mother Emanuel AME Church, the same location where nine congregants were killed by a gunman in 2015, where he argued that white supremacy is poisoning the country. "The word of God was pierced by bullets of hate and rage, propelled by not just gunpowder but by a poison — poison that for too long haunted this nation. What is that poison? White supremacy. All that is, is a poison. Throughout our history, it's ripped this nation apart. This has no place in America. Not today, tomorrow, or ever," Biden said, per CNN.
While Biden is attempting to use a similar playbook to 2020, the fact that progressives are rallying against him on the war in Gaza has been a significant headache for the Biden campaign. A recent Times/Sienna poll found that a majority of Americans, 57 percent, disapprove of Biden's handling of the war in Gaza, and a plurality, 46 percent, believe that 45th President Donald Trump would do a better job at handling the conflict.
Amongst voters, ages 18 to 29, a prominent Democrat voting base, Biden's numbers get even worse, with nearly three-fourths of respondents disapproving of the elderly Democrat's handling of Gaza. Biden's position has also led to animosity from a number of Muslim groups in swing states crucial to his reelection. As reported by The Associated Press, Democrats in the Arab-American community in Michigan, Minnesota, Arizona, Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania vowed to withdraw their support from Biden unless he calls for the Israeli Defense Forces to cease their operations in the Gaza Strip.
As Biden attempts to begin his campaign for reelection, he is facing increasing headwinds from both the right and the left as Americans as a whole disapprove of his leadership of the United States.
