On Monday, President Joe Biden responded to the attempted assassination of 45th President Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. The 81-year-old president explained that the Secret Service "needs more help" protecting Trump and stated that Congress should take action to ensure Trump's safety.
"Thank God the president's okay," Biden told reporters outside of the White House. "I think I've got a full report so far. One thing I want to make clear, the Secret Service needs more help. I think Congress should respond to their needs if, in fact, they need more servicemen. ... I think they need some more personnel."
In a statement following the shooting, President Biden stated that there is "no place for political violence" in America. "I have been briefed by my team regarding what federal law enforcement is investigating as a possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today. A suspect is in custody, and I commend the work of the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance and their efforts to keep the former President and those around him safe," Biden said in a statement. "I am relieved that the former President is unharmed."
"As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that the Secret Service has every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President's continued safety," Biden added.
While President Biden has repeatedly stated that political violence should never be a part of American life, the 81-year-old Democrat has done little to help lower the temperature of the 2024 campaign. Despite telling the American people in an Oval Office address following the first attempt on President Trump's life on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, that "political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated," Biden has continued to speak about Trump as a "threat" to the nation. During an interview with NBC in July, Biden said that it was "time to put Trump in a bullseye."
President Biden centered the majority of his presidential campaign on framing Trump as a threat to democracy. "Donald Trump is a genuine threat to this nation," Biden wrote on X in June. "He's a threat to our freedom. He's a threat to our democracy. He's literally a threat to everything America stands for."
