During an event in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, President Joe Biden, while speaking with first responders and 9/11 families at a volunteer fire station, was seen wearing a Trump 2024 hat after a firefighter handed it to him. The moment comes after a tense presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and President Donald Trump, in which Pennsylvania, a much-needed battleground state, came up multiple times.
The stunning moment came after President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, President Trump, and Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) attended the 9/11 remembrance memorial in New York on Wednesday morning. During the solemn event at Ground Zero, Trump briefly shook hands and exchanged some words with Harris.
Biden and Harris then left to lay a wreath at the memorial for Flight 93 in Shanksville and meet with families when President Biden decided to put on the Trump hat to allegedly show unity after he gave one of his own hats to a Trump supporter. Video and photos of the moment quickly went viral online, with Trump War Room writing on X, "Kamala did so bad in last night's debate, Joe Biden just put on a Trump hat."
In response to the bizarre moment, the White House explained that Biden only wore the hat briefly to show unity on the 9/11 anniversary. "At the Shanksville Fire Station, [President Biden] spoke about the country's bipartisan unity after 9/11 and said we needed to get back to that," White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates wrote on X. "As a gesture, he gave a hat to a Trump supporter who then said that in the same spirit, POTUS should put on his Trump cap. He briefly wore it." Reporters were not invited into the room as President Biden and Vice President Harris met with the 9/11 families on the solemn day of remembrance.
The small moment in southwestern Pennsylvania highlights the importance of the state in the 2024 race. Suppose President Trump wins the Keystone State in November. In that case, his chances of winning the presidency increase drastically, given the number of paths to 270 electoral votes open up for the Republican ticket. If Trump wins Pennsylvania and holds North Carolina, he would only need to win Georgia or two other states to win outright. The same is true for the Harris-Walz ticket. If the Democrats win Pennsylvania, they only need two other swing states to win the election.
