On Friday, 45th President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy at Trump Tower in New York City for a closed-door meeting to discuss the war in Ukraine and how, under a second Trump administration, he would help bring about a negotiated peace “that’s good for both sides." The meeting is the first time the two leaders have met in over five years.
"We’re going to work very much with both parties to try and get this settled and get it worked out," Trump explained to reporters, as reported by NBC News. "It has to end. At some point, it has to end. He’s gone through hell. His country has gone through hell."
"We have a very good relationship. I have a very good relationship with President Putin. And if we win, we’re going to get it resolved very quickly," Trump said before Zelenskyy noted that he hoped that Trump would have better relations with Ukraine. “Oh, I see. Yeah, but you know, it takes two to tango."
President Zelenskyy explained to the media that he believes that Trump sees eye-to-eye on the necessity for Ukraine to stand strong against Russia. The Ukrainian president also noted that the upcoming November election will be a turning point in the United States but emphasized the need for American strength the remain a constant. "I think we have a common view that the war in Ukraine has to be stopped. Putin cannot win, and Ukrainians have to prevail," Zelenskyy said. "We understand that after November ... we hope that the strength of the United States will be very strong."
In addition to telling the press about the closed-door meeting, the Republican candidate reviewed the 2019 Democrat-led impeachment, which centered around a phone call between the Ukrainian leader and himself that saw then-President Trump call upon Zelenskyy to open an investigation into then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. "It was a hoax, just a Democrat hoax, which we won," Trump said about the impeachment proceedings. Trump noted that President Zelenskyy explained that he did nothing wrong in their phone call, with Trump explaining that the Eastern European leader "was a piece of steel. He gave a very honest, straight answer, and that really, essentially ended the impeachment hoax, and I appreciated that."
