Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) came out swinging against President Joe Biden's Tuesday executive order that finally took much-needed action on the southern border with the Republican leader calling the move a "charade." The rebuke came during Johnson's weekly press conference where he reminded the American public that the president said four months ago that he had done everything he could on the border. The executive order shows that it was a lie.
"It was 126 days ago today that Joe Biden said, 'I've done all I can do.' He was asked why he wouldn't use his extensive executive authority to address the border catastrophe that he himself created, and 126 days ago, he looked into the camera and said, 'I'm out of options. I've done all that I can do.' He tried to convince us all this time that there was no way that he could possibly fix the mess," Johnson said. "On the day he took office, over three and a half years ago, he walked into the Oval Office, and he started issuing executive orders. We counted 64 specific executive actions that President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas took to open that border wide."
Speaker Johnson didn't hold back in his criticism of the executive order, calling it "window dressing" and a desperate attempt to convince the American people that he is addressing the issue. "They engineered the open border," Johnson said. "They did it intentionally. There's no question about it. Now he wants to issue some weak executive order to try to address the issue," the Republican leader said. "The devil will definitely be in the details here."
The executive order, which is already facing legal challenges from the ACLU, largely bars migrants who crossed the border illegally from seeking asylum and instead will be deported back to Mexico or their home countries. The White House's policy change mirrors some of the policy preferences of the Trump administration, however, it leaves out the reimplementation of the 'Remain in Mexico' policy and the order only goes in place when an average of 2,500 migrants cross the border every day.
"Today I'm moving past Republican obstruction and using executive authorities available to me as president to do what I can on my own to address the border," Biden said during a speech on Tuesday. Despite three and a half years of inaction, Biden continues to attempt to shift blame for the border crisis on Republicans who have demanded action since he took office in 2021. Millions of illegal migrants have entered the country since Biden's inauguration, and the American people aren't going to be fooled by the president's lackluster executive order.

Today, he’ll announce an executive action using the same authority he denied having.
