On Tuesday evening, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) made his pick for the 2024 Republican primary after months of choosing to stay out of the race to focus on his own reelection this November. Cruz decided to back leading Republican presidential candidate and 45th President Donald Trump for the nomination.
"Last night was decisive. It was a dominating victory for Donald Trump. I have to say there is no place like the Iowa caucuses. I know it intimately. The men and women of Iowa take their responsibility incredibly seriously. They scrutinize the candidate. It is an amazing process, and I'm a big believer in letting democracy play out. Well, last night it played out, and I got to say, Trump's victory was across the board," Cruz told Sean Hannity during a Fox News appearance. "He won 51 percent of the vote. He won 98 of the counties."
"Congratulations to President Trump on that dominating victory, and at this point, I believe this race is over, so I am proud to endorse Donald Trump for president of the United States. I look forward to supporting him enthusiastically because I think it is time for the Republican Party to unite, for us to come together," he continued. "We have to beat Joe Biden. We have to beat this disastrous cultural Marxist agenda in the White House. We have got to retake the United States Senate. We have to hold the House. We have to come together and win. With the results last night, the people have spoken, and it is time to move on for victory in November."
With all caucusgoers counted, Trump secured 51 percent of the vote while Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) came in second with 21.2 percent, former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) came in third with 19.1 percent, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy (R-OH) was only able to win 7.7 percent support. Cruz's decision to make his pick for 2024 following the Iowa caucus, a contest he won against Trump in 2016, comes after dozens of other prominent lawmakers voiced their support for the 45th president.
Cruz's decision to endorse Trump is the right move given the leading Republican candidate's strong performance not only in the Iowa caucus but in the upcoming matchup against Joe Biden. According to the Real Clear Politics polling average, Trump has a lead of 1.3 points over the 81-year-old Democrat in the upcoming general election matchup.
