During testimony before the Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security committees on Tuesday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) blasted acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe, Jr. for his agency's failure and his inability to be transparent and deliver much-needed answers to the American people about the security failure that took place on July 13 that led to a gunman being able to evade security and take eight shots at 45th President Donald Trump, grazing the Republican candidate's right ear, killing one supporter, and seriously injuring two others.
Sen. Cruz, alongside Sen. Hawley (R-MO), held Rowe's feet to the fire to demand answers about the greatest security failure since the assassination attempt of President Ronald Reagan in 1981. Cruz opened his questioning by focusing on a statement from a Secret Service spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, who claimed that reporting from the media indicating that the Secret Service rejected requests from Trump's security detail was false.
In response to Cruz's question about whether the spokesperson's claim was true, Rowe explained that the Secret Service did not deny any assets to Trump's team for the Butler rally. However, Rowe could not say how many requests the Trump team had made since 2022. Cruz then pressed the acting director on whether anyone in the press team had been fired and whether or not Rowe recalled approving the spokesman's statement. Rowe responded that no one had been fired, that he didn't recall approving the statement, and that he would provide the committee with all the requests sent to the Secret Service and the agency's responses to the committee.
Senator Cruz's questioning of Rowe then got heated when the Texan asserted that the Secret Service leadership made a political decision to withhold assets from the Trump campaign and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s campaign. "I have a simple question: yes or no. Did the same person deny the Trump requests that also denied the RFK requests?" Cruz asked.
"Senator, that's not a yes or no question. One, there is a process for a candidate nominee to receive protection. That is a bicameral, bipartisan process," Rowe asked before Cruz interrupted him. "You are refusing to asnwer the question. Let me ask because the failures on that day were catastrophic." Cruz then demanded to know the size of the detail appointed to Trump's team compared to President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
"Is it your testimony that in Butler, Pennsylvania, Donald Trump had the same number of agents protecting him that Joe Biden had at a comparable event?" Cruz asked. "I'm telling you the shift, the close protection shift. That's what you asked me, senator, and I'm trying to answer it," Rowe asked before being interrupted. The two men then got into a heated shouting match as Rowe refused to answer clearly. Rowe eventually committed to getting Cruz the exact number of agents assigned to Trump versus Biden.
