On Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) conducted a phone interview from India with conservative commentator Tucker Carlson to discuss the ongoing showdown between the Lone Star State and the federal government along the border at Eagle Pass. During the interview, the governor explained that he is "prepared" for whatever the Biden administration has to throw at him, and he added that the potential federalization of the Texas National Guard would be a "boneheaded" move by the president that wouldn't deter Texas.
When Carlson asked the governor about the potential for the Biden administration to take over the Texas National Guard, Abbott explained that it would not deter the state from securing the border. "Well, first, I would be shocked. That would be a boneheaded move on his part, a total disaster. But for one, as you might imagine, we are prepared in the event that that unlikely event does occur to make sure that we will be able to continue exactly what we've been doing over the past months, and that is building these barriers," Abbott said. "The Biden administration is now trying to attack us because of it, and we will continue to do exactly what we are doing to expand our denial of illegal entry into the state of Texas."
The governor also explained that various Republican states have sent National Guard units to assist with securing the border. "There have been about 10 [states] so far that have sent National Guard or other law enforcement. They are now joined together with us, and this is a fight for the future of America," Abbott said.
"All we can do is be as prepared as possible, deploy as many people as possible, do as much as possible to put up more border barriers and deny illegal entry," Abbott said when asked about further confrontation with the federal government. "We're working hard regardless of what the Biden administration is doing."
