On Tuesday, the Trump campaign released a new ad against Vice President Kamala Harris that will be airing in the swing states of Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, Georgia, and Michigan. The ad is the most significant ad buy of the general election so far and represents the beginning of a new race after President Joe Biden dropped out earlier this month.
The ad, which cost about $12 million to run till August 12, focuses on Kamala Harris' "dangerously liberal" policies on the southern border and her role as "border czar" under President Biden.
"This is America's border czar, and she has failed us. Under Harris, over 10 million illegally here. A quarter of a million Americans dead from fentanyl. Brutal migrant crimes and ISIS now here," the ad said before featuring a clip of Kamala being questioned about not visiting the southern border. "Kamala Harris. Failed. Weak. Dangerously liberal."
According to AdImpact, the Trump campaign spend millions to put the ad out to battleground state voters, with $2.7 million in Pennsylvania, $2.3 million in Georgia, $2.3 million in Michigan, $1.9 million in Arizona, $1.8 million in Nevada, and $1.3 million in Wisconsin.
The Trump campaign has largely shied away from spending money on ads in recent months, but the vice president's entry into the race has seemed to change that. Republicans have begun to target Harris' past policy positions to draw a contrast between her progressive policies and those of President Trump. To combat this, Harris has reneged on multiple former policy positions to attempt to convince the American public that she isn't as radical as she formerly was.
Some of the positions that she has retreated from in recent days include her commitment to ban fracking, her support of healthcare for all, her desire to confiscate all assault weapons, and healthcare and free education for illegal migrants.
The Harris campaign is desperately trying to convince the American public that her past progressive policies will not be pursued under a Harris presidency, but the treasure trove of footage of the vice president espousing those views will be good fodder for any campaign, whether presidential, senatorial, or congressional, to use to showcase the Democratic Party's "dangerously liberal" policies that simply do not fly with the American people.
