On Thursday, Republican nominee Donald Trump held a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The press event, the first since Kamala Harris entered the race, covered nearly every topic of the 2024 campaign, including abortion. When asked by a reporter about the subject, Trump took the time to expose Kamala Harris' and Tim Walz's extremism on the topic, explaining that they support abortion up to birth.
"The Democrats are really the radical ones on this because they're allowed to do abortion in the eighth and ninth month and even after birth. If you look at your new governor from Minnesota, he's like the former governor [of Virginia]," Trump said, referencing former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. "The Minnesota gentleman, this guy agrees with that. He is the most liberal...Look, between her and him, there's never been anything like this. There has never been a combination, so...I'll use the word progressive...But there certainly has never been somebody so liberal as these two or even close."
Trump has made clear that he supports the right of each state to decide its stance on the abortion issue and commented that even Republican-led states have voted in favor of abortion access in recent referendums. The Harris campaign has used the issue of abortion as a rallying cry for women to back their campaign, pledging to restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. The vice president's campaign has argued that Trump is responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade after his appointment of three Supreme Court justices led to the issue going back to the states.
Despite these attacks, Trump has maintained that legal scholars have long criticized the Roe v. Wade ruling and insisted that the Supreme Court take action to give the issue back to the voters rather than allowing nine justices in Washington, D.C., to decide on such a morally complicated issue. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch said as much during a recent interview, explaining, "Those are deeply complex legal questions on which reasonable minds can, of course, and do disagree. And that when it comes to Roe v. Wade, for example, what did the court decide? Decided that we the people should answer that question, not nine people sitting in Washington, D.C."
President Trump's stance on abortion is a middle-of-the-road position that allows for the voters of each state to decide where they stand on the issue. While Trump wants the American people to decide for themselves, Kamala Harris would rather force Americans to accept her extremist position on abortion that would allow for late-term abortions.
