On Friday, Tucker Carlson started his final interview with Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) during the FAMiLY Leadership Summit.
The summit, which can be viewed here, hosted multiple GOP presidential candidates including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former Governor Nikki Haley (R-SC), Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), former Vice President Mike Pence (R-IN), Vivek Ramaswamy, and other candidates. Tucker Carlson will be interviewing each of them.
The interview began with DeSantis's stance on abortion on the federal level with DeSantis saying that he would use the bully pulpit to convince legislators in state governments to pass pro-life legislation if he were elected president.
DeSantis explained that he lost some support from passing the six-week abortion ban in Florida but that he would do it again if given the chance.
When asked about how he would convince Americans who are in favor of abortion, he said that he would argue to them that people are better off when they are given a chance.
The conversation then turned to climate change and red tide in Florida. In response to this, DeSantis said that the push for electric vehicles is an attempt to control the citizenry and instead lawmakers should focus on environmental conservation.
DeSantis then talked about the millions of Americans from blue states who have moved to Florida. He explained that many of the folks who have moved to the Sunshine State are people who have been disenchanted with liberal policies. The candidate argued that voters are being dissuaded by the policies pushed by the woke left.
The discussion then moved to Ukraine and DeSantis' various flip-flop statements on the war. DeSantis said that he learned a lesson during his service in the military that policymakers need to have a concrete idea of what needs to be achieved. He said that DC needs to put forth an objective in Ukraine rather than maintaining the status quo.
He argued that American interests need to be central to American foreign policy and that it is disappointing to see American tax dollars going to fund a foreign war when the southern border is open. He notably said that the military needs to be authorized to take action against the cartels saying that they will be "stone cold dead."
DeSantis said that the goal of the Ukraine war is to have a "sustainable peace in Europe." He said that the current policy is leading to a multi-year quagmire and that the two sides are fighting over territory in the eastern section of the country. DeSantis also stated that it is humiliating for the country to run out of ammunition when China is a major threat in the Pacific.
He continued to explain that American interests need to be priority number one and a weak America invites conflict with China.
When asked what he would do when president, DeSantis said that Europe needs to do more to fund its own defense. He also said that he would bring the war to an end by stopping giving Iran a free pass and reinstating energy independence.
The conversation then turned to digital currency by the federal government. DeSantis said that such a move by the federal reserve would not be recognized by DeSantis if elected.
Tucker then asked DeSantis about the prevalence of the deep state and the vastness of a Democrat-leaning bureaucracy. DeSantis said that he would automatically get a new director of the FBI and he would ensure that all the positions for the executive would be assigned on day one. He explained that the people who fill those spots need to have strong character to fight against the attacks from the media.
The presidential hopeful also said that he would fire bureaucrats who overstep their bounds, including Antony Fauci if he was president in 2020.
Carlson then turned to the censoring of information during Covid-19 to which DeSantis explained that the censoring of dissent led to major negative impacts for Americans. He then explained that there needs to be a reckoning so that they don't conduct censorship again. He also emphasized that putting the bureaucracy in different areas around the country would be a good way to disrupt the centralized power of Washington. DeSantis also said that he would issue more pardons as president.
The presidential candidate then went on to explain that the classification process is a "huge problem" and that the government being turned on the American people is "the Founding Father's worst nightmare."
Finally, when asked if Biden is going to be the Democrat nominee, DeSantis said that he thinks it would be quite difficult to remove Biden as an incumbent but that he would enjoy a fight between him and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
