On Thursday, Tennessee Republicans voted to expel multiple Democrat lawmakers from their positions as state lawmakers after they led an anti-gun protest in the state capitol last week following the shooting at the Nashville Covenant Elementary School. In response to this, the White House called the move “undemocratic” and “without precedent.”
As of this report, Republicans have expelled Rep. Justin Jones (D) and are currently considering the expulsion of two other Democrats: Reps. Gloria Johnson and Justin Pearson.
The three lawmakers have understood that they haven’t followed the rules of order and decorum about speaking out of turn while on the House floor.
“As I was walking out here today we saw news that Republican legislators in Tennessee were preparing to vote for the expulsion of three Democratic officials,” Karine Jean Pierre began in response during her daily press briefing, adding that they “stood in solidarity with children and families peacefully protesting for action on gun safety.”
“The fact that this vote is happening is shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent,” she claimed. “Across Tennessee and across America our kids are paying the price for the action of Republican lawmakers who refuse to take action on stronger gun laws.”
It is noteworthy that the move to expel the lawmakers is not unprecedented for the Tennessee legislature. In 1980, a state representative was found guilty of accepting a bribe while in office thus leading to expulsion. More recently in 2016, a lawmaker faced allegations of sexual harassment and was expelled as well.

Additionally, the protest for increased gun control was not fully peaceful as the White House press secretary claims.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, hundreds of protesters occupied the capitol and demanded that legislators take action to ban weapons protected under the Second Amendment.
Protesters demanded that legislators “do something” with one protester yelling at a lawmaker, “Red flag laws! One thing you can do, representative. One thing you can do,” as reported by the Tennessean.
Multiple videos showed protesters getting violent towards both lawmakers and state capitol police officers as they shouted from the banister thus disrupting House proceedings. This was exacerbated by the fact that Rep. Jones used a bullhorn to disrupt House proceedings alongside the protesters.
The Tennessee GOP is taking bold action to hold these Democrat lawmakers accountable for their actions. Perhaps more state legislators should consider following suit.
