Ten days after the "catastrophic implosion" authorities believe destroyed the OceanGate Titan resulting in the death of its pilot and four passengers, the gnarled wreckage, twisted and distorted by the immense pressure that destroyed the vessel, was brought ashore in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.
Footage showed the scene as Canadian Coast Guard crews somberly and carefully lowered pieces of the wreck from the hold of a recovery vessel. Tarps were quickly laid across the wreckage both to preserve the evidence and also the victims' dignity, as unidentified human remains were discovered within the crumpled carbon fiber and titanium hull.
CEO of OceanGate Stockton Rush, Pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Shahzada Dawood, and his son Sleman Dawood along with British explorer Hamis Harding are believed to have perished near instantaneously when the submarine experienced a structural failure and imploded within a fraction of a second.
David Mearns, a rescue expert who knew two of the victims told Sky News Thursday when news broke of a "debris field" resulting from the submarine's loss, "They don't use phrases like 'debris field' unless there's no chance of a recovery of the men alive. A debris field implies a break-up of the submersible... that really sort of indicates what is the worst-case scenario, which is a catastrophic failure, and generally that's an implosion. "
"The only saving grace is that it would have been immediate - literally in milliseconds - and the men wouldn't have known what was happening."
According to The Daily Mail, the U.S. Coast Guard stated that a Marine Board of Investigation or MBI has been created, the most extensive probe possible. Coast Guard Chief Investigator and probe leader Jason Neubauer told the outlet, "My primary goal is to prevent a similar occurrence by making the necessary recommendations to enhance the safety of the maritime domain worldwide," he added further, "The MBI is already in its initial evidence-collection phase, including debris salvage operations at the incident site."
Neubauer noted that the MBI could make recommendations for criminal or civil charges "as necessary."
RAWSALERTS reported on the grisly findings of the investigation Wednesday, posting to Twitter, "The wreckage of the Titan submersible has been successfully retrieved from the sea floor has arrived at St. John’s harbour in Canada. The Titan, which is believed to have imploded last week about 1,600 feet from the Titanic, tragically claimed the lives of all five crew members on board. The Coast Guard has confirmed that presumed human remains were found within the wreckage. United States medical professionals will now conduct a formal analysis."
