The good samaritan concealed-carry firearm owner who intervened to rescue a store clerk in Cassopolis, Michigan with a six-pack of Miller Lite in hand will face no charges, according to an announcement from Cass County prosecutor Victor Fitz.
Local outlet WOOD-TV reported Wednesday that the actions of the still-unnamed citizen who held a concealed-carry license and had prior experience as a security guard were "lawful and justified" to defend both himself and the imperiled store employee.
WATCH:Under Michigan law, if a person is not engaged in a crime, then one may use deadly force against another person if they "honestly and reasonably" believe that the use of said force is "essential to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to oneself or another."
As previously reported by DC Enquirer, 35-year-old Cornelius Anthony Martin held up the store clerk while brandishing the box cutter on July 27th. The good samaritan shown in surveillance video footage was already in the store selecting a six-pack of Miller Lite when he saw the robbery unfold, drew his firearm, and fired seven times at Martin striking him "in the arm, back and face," according to police.
Mike "MrGunsNGear" of MugClub Network shared the video to X with the commentary, "Armed customer shoots would be robber in Cassopolis, Michigan. I'd personally recommend dropping the 6 pack before engaging for a better firing grip but we all have our own unique priorities. Regardless - a good guy with a gun prevented multiple crimes, yet again. Share this with all your gun grabber friends."
In the comments, many have hailed the man for both his marksmanship and situational awareness, as well as his courage. While some criticized his continuing to hold his beer while firing, others suggested this could've been best to allow for stealth and maintaining 'eyes on' the assailant. Others still, jokingly criticized his choice of beer.
The assailant Cornelius Anthony Martin, is facing several charges including "armed robbery, assault with intent to rob while armed, felonious assault, and habitual offender (fourth offense notice)," according to WNDU-TV. Prosecutors reported he was armed with a knife. The repeat offending felon is being held on bond of $100,000 and is due back in court on August 24th for a pre-preliminary hearing.
Many online, citing recent country music hit by Jason Aldean have quipped, "try that in a small town" alluding to the 2,000 population of Cassopolis, Michigan, and the patron's actions that the store clerk described simply when he said, "He saved my life."
