Audiences have spoken and coinciding with Hollywood's content production machine getting kneecapped by a catastrophic actors' strike coupled with a pre-existing writers' strike, independent Angel Studios production 'Sound of Freedom' is poised to crest the $100 million ticket sales mark later this week.
As previously reported by DC Enquirer, the film eclipsed $50 million in sales within the first ten days. Three days later, per Box Office Mojo, the Jim Caviezel-led juggernaut had earned more than $85 million. On day one, it even crushed the latest installment of Disney's Indiana Jones franchise.
The film shines a harsh light on the heartbreaking world of human trafficking, emphasizing the plight of children swept into the living nightmare of modern slavery with the battle cry "God's children are not for sale."
The story focuses on former Department of Homeland Security Agent Tim Ballard, portrayed by Caviezel, who leaves his government career behind on a personal mission to rescue a young girl from the horrors of sexual slavery in South America and is based on Ballard's real-life experiences and work founding Operation Underground Railroad.
According to The Daily Wire, Jared Geesey, SVP of Global Distribution at Angel Studios, said, "While the entire summer movie box office lineup is underperforming, our small independent film continues to grow week over week."
“Driven by millions of fans and supporters, SOUND of FREEDOM has become a national—and soon international—movement for change.”
Brandon Purdie, Head of Theatrical Distribution for Angel Studios, said in a press release, "There have only been 10 wide release movies in box office history that have had a 2nd weekend increase greater than 35% over their opening weekend. All of them did it at Christmas. Angel Studios is the only Studio to do this in the summer blockbuster season with SOUND OF FREEDOM."
Even The New York Times has been forced to concede "'Sound of Freedom,' a thriller starring Jim Caviezel as a federal agent who takes on child traffickers, will not be the summer box office’s biggest hit. But it may be its unlikeliest." To which Angel Studios tweeted, "Kicking our feet and giggling every time The New York Times writes about us."
Angel Studios has gained prominence for its breakout series including 'The Chosen,' which depicts the lives of Jesus Christ and his disciples, 'The Wingfeather Saga,' a children's series based on the novels of Andrew Peterson as well as 'Dry Bar Comedy,' a 'clean' but side-splittingly funny stand-up comedy series featuring 60 different headlining comics.
