Most Deadly Memorial Day Weekend In Nearly A Decade In 'Democrat-Run' Chicago Sees 11 Killed And Dozens Injured

The Democrat-dominated city of Chicago was once again the stage for some of the most horrific violence seen in the United States over the Memorial Day weekend. Reports indicate that over forty people were wounded and 11 have died in the most deadly Memorial Day weekend in nearly a decade.

According to The Daily Wire, citing the Chicago Sun-Times, approximately 48 people were injured overall in gun and knife-related assaults, with 11 dying. At least two of the violent episodes were in close proximity, (less than two city blocks) to newly elected Mayor Brandon Johnson's (D) home on the West Side.

The Sun-Times wrote that the death toll was the highest on record since 2015 when twelve people were killed. However, the number of wounded did not surpass the astonishing 71 people injured over Memorial Day weekend in 2016.

The dire nature of the situation was hinted at in the Chicago publication which noted that additional police officers were scheduled to work the weekend with the mayor and his interim Chicago Police Superintendent Fred Waller canceling officers' days off to increase staffing.

Daily Wire reported that the incidents ranged far across the city from the Auburn Gresham neighborhood and, the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, to the Little Village neighborhood, the Austin neighborhood, the Lake View neighborhood, West Garfield Park, and Woodlawn.

According to the outlet, before the weekend of violence began Johnson said, “It’s going to take all of us, not just the police, not just city government, to ensure that our communities can live and thrive in peace and safety. However you decide to spend your holiday weekend in Chicago, your safety is my top priority.”

ABC7 in Chicago offered a differing total of casualties over the weekend, reporting that 53 people were shot.

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) noted via Twitter, "11 killed. 45 wounded. One weekend. Democrat-run Chicago."

The Sun-Times noted that hundreds of yellow-vest-clad "peacekeepers" were in the streets throughout the city ostensibly to put down the violence on the South and West Sides, while hundreds of activists protested against violence Saturday in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.

According to ABC7, Johnson claimed that poverty is to blame for the outbreak of violence, "Poverty didn't go away over the weekend. Like we understand that when communities have been disinvested in and traumatized, that you are seeing the manifestation of that trauma."

In a statement, he wrote, "The violence our city experienced this weekend is intolerable. It produced pain and trauma that devastated communities across Chicago, and my heart breaks for everyone affected. That's why as mayor, I am committed to leveraging every single resource at our disposal to protect every single life in our city. This holiday weekend, thousands of police officers, first responders, city workers, business leaders, organizers, faith leaders, and violence interrupters tirelessly dedicated themselves to keeping Chicago safe. I offer my deep gratitude to all those involved. We have much more work to do, but the work performed by these individuals this weekend is the foundation for how we will ultimately secure safety together."
