On Wednesday evening, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) launched his official campaign on Twitter Spaces with Elon Musk. Despite various initial crashes as hundreds of thousands attempted to join, Ron DeSantis officially announced. Alongside his announcement, the Florida governor's campaign made over a million dollars in an hour.
"There was so much enthusiasm for Governor DeSantis' vision for our Great American Comeback that he literally busted up the internet. Washington is next," wrote DeSantis' campaign press secretary Brian Griffin. "$1 million raised online in one hour... and counting!"
During the governor's Twitter Space, DeSantis gave a short speech and then answered questions from supporters and public officials who have endorsed him. The topics ranged from immigration to Disney to Bitcoin.
Many in the media and online have begun to say that the launch went poorly with many emphasizing the early issues as well as the feeling like the event wasn't advertised correctly. In addition, many are claiming that the questions were "soft-balls" and didn't tackle issues like foreign policy.
Alongside DeSantis' official launch on Twitter, he also posted a campaign video that emphasized his vision of a "Great American Comeback."
The presidential candidate will then move to Fox News for an interview on 'Fox News Tonight' at 8 pm EST.
Over the weekend he will be meeting with donors in Miami before jetting off to Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.
DeSantis will be the seventh mainstream candidate to enter the race for the GOP nomination with 45th President Donald Trump, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), former Governor Asa Hutchinson (R-AR), former California gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.
DeSantis' busy week ahead will be an introduction to the national stage for the Flordia native. The governor has been slipping in the polls in recent months for the Republican primary nomination with 45th President Donald Trump showing double-digit leads as high as 35 points over his opponents.
