On Saturday, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) announced that he will pardon Sgt. Daniel Perry following his persecution by Austin District Attorney Jose Garza.
Perry was found guilty of murder earlier this week by an Austin-based grand jury after the Army sergeant defended himself from a man pointing a rifle at him during a Black Lives Matter protest in downtown Austin in 2020.
At the time, the Austin Police Department did not pursue charges given that it was a justified shooting, however, DA Garza took action and in so doing reportedly withheld evidence from the jury according to the detective on the case.
Due to this perceived unjustified persecution of Perry, many have called on Governor Greg Abbott to take swift action and pardon him.
So in response, the governor announced on Saturday that “I am working as swiftly as Texas law allows regarding the pardon of Sgt. Perry.”

“Texas has one of the strongest “Stand Your Ground” laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney,” the governor wrote.
“Unlike the President or some other states, the Texas Constitution limits the Governor’s pardon authority to only act on a recommendation by the Board of Pardons and Paroles,” he explained. “Texas law DOES allow the Governor to request the Board of Pardons and Paroles to determine if a person should be granted a pardon.”
“I have made that request and instructed the Board to expedite its review,” Abbott wrote, adding, “I look forward to approving the Board’s pardon recommendation as soon as it hits my desk.”
“Additionally, I have already prioritized reining in rogue District Attorneys,” the Texas governor stated, adding, “and the Texas legislature is working on laws to achieve that goal.”

With rising pressure on the Texas governor to take action, Texans are relieved that this corruption of justice will be remedied. DA Garza’s brazen attempt to lock up Sgt. Perry for self-defense goes against everything that Texas stands for and his attempt to imprison a man who feared for his life is despicable.
