"On November 8, 2023, we issued subpoenas to your client, Robert Hunter Biden, for a deposition on December 13, 2023," the two lawmakers wrote to Hunter's attorney Abbe Lowell. "We received your letters dated November 28, 2023, and December 6, 2023, concerning the deposition subpoenas."
"Contrary to the assertions in your letter, there is no 'choice' for Mr. Biden to make; the subpoenas compel him to appear for a deposition on December 13," Comer and Jordan explained. "If Mr. Biden does not appear for his deposition on December 13, 2023, the Committees will initiate contempt of Congress proceedings."
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Comer, who has been at the forefront of investigations into Biden, officially subpoenaed Hunter Biden, James Biden, and Rob Walker to appear before Congress last month. Comer also requested interviews with Sara Biden, Hallie Biden, Elizabeth Secundy, Melissa Cohen, and Tony Bobulinski.
In response to the subpoena, Hunter's attorneys wrote to the chairman to express their displeasure with the House Republican's investigation, and they signaled that they would be going on the offensive to counteract the investigation. "We have seen you use closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort the facts and misinform the public. We therefore propose opening the door," Hunter's attorneys wrote in the letter. "If, as you claim, your efforts are important and involve issues that Americans should know about, then let the light shine on these proceedings."
"Your empty investigation has gone on too long, wasting too many better-used resources," they continued. "It should come to an end. Consequently, Mr. Biden will appear at such a public hearing on the date you noticed, December 13, or any date in December that we can arrange. From all the individuals you have requested depositions or interviews, all you will learn is that your accusations are baseless. However, the American people should see that for themselves."
Rep. Comer responded to the attorney's letter by explaining that "Hunter Biden is trying to play by his own rules instead of following the rules required of everyone else. That won't stand with House Republicans. Our lawfully issued subpoena to Hunter Biden requires him to appear for a deposition on December 13. We expect full cooperation with our subpoena for a deposition but also agree that Hunter Biden should have the opportunity to testify in a public setting at a future date."
As Hunter Biden continues to attempt to escape accountability, House Republicans are refusing to let him get away with avoiding testimony. The threat of contempt of Congress proceedings will likely force the president's son to appear before Congress whether he wants to or not.Read Comer and Jordan's letter below:
