On Monday, the judge in the Trump case brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis explained during a hearing that Willis could face disqualification if the allegations of an improper relationship that resulted in her own financial benefit with special prosecutor Nathan Wade were true.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Nathan Wade's estranged wife, Joycelyn Wade, submitted a document to the Cobb County courthouse showing that the special prosecutor had paid for plane tickets for Fani Willis and himself to San Fransisco and Miami. The submission of the document comes after former Trump aid Michael Roman's lawyer Ashleigh Merchant filed a motion arguing that the duo prosecuting Trump were engaged in a romantic relationship that led to Willis paying him an exorbitant salary to then spend on lavish vacations. The district has paid Wade over $650,000 since he joined the office in November 2021.
In the lengthy document submitted to the court last month, Willis admitted to the personal relationship with Wade but argued that the allegations against her are "meritless" and "salacious." She went on to argue that the judge should reject any attempt by Trump or the various co-defendants from attempting to get her removed from the case. She also argued that there was no evidence that the relationship between Wade and herself impacted her work.
Despite Willis' attempt to dissuade Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee from taking action, the judge said additional action was needed for him to make a decision as to whether she should be disqualified from the case.
"It alleges a personal relationship that resulted in a financial benefit to the district attorney. That is no longer a matter of speculation. The state has admitted a relationship existed. And so what remains to be proven is the existence and extent of any financial benefit," he said. "Because I think it's possible that the facts alleged could result in disqualification. I think an evidentiary hearing must occur to establish the record on those core allegations."
