'It's A Life Skill': Father Ridiculed After Teaching Daughter How To Gut A Fish In Viral Reddit Post

Reddit user Fair_Moose4755 took to Reddit's 'Am I The A**hole' (AITA) subreddit this Tuesday to determine if he was wrong for teaching his daughter to gut a fish.

The AITA subreddit describes itself as "a catharsis for the frustrated moral philosopher in all of us, and a place to finally find out if you were wrong in an argument that's been bothering you." It asks users to tell them about a non-violent conflict to determine who was in the wrong in a given situation.

The thread, which has garnered 3,600 comments to date, begins by saying, "I 38 have two daughters 13 and 10. They are wonderful and when I was growing up I had to learn a lot of life skills. My wife and I have been teaching them life skills such as cooking, cleaning, and car maintenance. My oldest is older so she gets much more hands on experience."

The user continues adding, "This summer we went camping and she had to make the fire and tent. Get the feel for it, we went fishing but didn’t catch anything. I went to port and I bought a few whole fish not gutted. We live on the ocean this is a life skill, it’s common to buy fish whole. If she want to eat fish she needs to know how to gut them"

"Took it home and was going to teach her how to process a whole fish. I think this is important to do and understanding. It’s a fish and she was grossed out, but I made her do it and then we cooked it. She went to my wife telling her I forced her to gut a fish," the post continued. "This resulting in an argument about forcing the kids to do stuff but it’s a life skill and we forced them to learn how to cook and do laundry so I don’t see the difference. She is mad at me and so is my oldest."

Fox News Digital asked several people to offer their reactions to the post. One Boston area dad told the outlet, "I don’t see the big deal in learning to gut a fish, but I’m not a teenage girl... Boys and girls are different. My guys were thrilled to catch, clean and gut fish, but who knows had I been the dad to a girl?"

Fox News Digital adds, "a dad and grandfather in New York also said that he did see the 'big deal' in terms of teaching teenagers — male or female — to gut a fish. But should the family have gotten into an argument about it? 'No,' he said. 'This all should've been discussed beforehand without a lot of drama,' the father added."
