The Disney-owned streaming service Hulu has refused to run political ads featuring topics like gun control and abortion on their platform, further enraging Democrat activists seeking to change hearts and minds ahead of November’s midterms.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), and Democratic Governors Association (DGA) had purchased ad space earlier this month on July 15, to launch attacks against the GOP, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
While the ads play on other social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, Roku, and others, Hulu has stood firm and will not show the content to its consumer base. Following the move, however, Democrats — who have been criticized for their own brand of censorship at times — tried to paint the incident as Hulu attempting to mask the facts.
“Hulu’s censorship of the truth is outrageous, offensive, and another step down a dangerous path for our country,” said the three executive directors from each committee: Christie Roberts, Tim Persico, and Noam Lee, in a joint statement.
They added, “Voters have the right to know the facts about MAGA Republicans’ agenda on issues like abortion – and Hulu is doing a huge disservice to the American people by blocking voters from learning the truth about the GOP record or denying these issues from even being discussed.”
The Hulu controversy comes just months after Disney fell into hot water with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) over the company’s attack against the “Parental Rights in Education” bill. The Florida Republican has also expressed general reservations over Disney’s culture and the issues they choose to exert influence over.
“In Florida, our policies got to be based on the best interest of Florida citizens, not on the musing of woke corporations,” DeSantis had said.
While some companies have decided to stay out of the political arena, others have spoken out on hot-button issues like abortion, voting, and other topics – often to the financial detriment of their brands.
Disney’s attack on the Florida bill led to Disney World having its privileged tax status and self-governing status stripped away.
Meanwhile, companies like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Nike, and Alaska Airlines have all stated they will pay for employees to get abortions, which lead to pushback from some conservatives, Fox Business reported.
With companies continuing to get involved in politics, it seems Disney is beginning to understand the costs of wading in such waters — as their streaming services step back to take a neutral stance on controversial issues, in favor of the almighty dollar.
