Does China Deserve Consequences? Republican Congressmen Introduce Bill Allowing Americans To Sue China for COVID-19 Damages

Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Michael Burgess (R-TX) filed a bill with the House of Representatives that, if enacted, would provide the American people with the legal right to sue the government of the People’s Republic of China for damages incurred by the COVID-19 virus that multiple reports now indicate likely originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Smith, in his capacity as chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, told Breitbart News Sunday,

“With people finally recognizing that COVID-19 more than likely came from the Wuhan lab — something I raised from the very beginning — it is outrageous that no one has been held to account.”

The Congressman continued, “China’s communist leaders knew they had a deadly and highly contagious virus on their hands, and they attempted to hide its origins and imposed their malign influence on the World Health Organization to echo their false narrative.”

According to a press release from Smith’s office, the congressman said, “Knowing that Xi Jinping and his Communist regime systematically failed to be truthful and transparent, our legislation seeks to not only gain access to more information but also provide much-needed relief to the loved ones of those who died and others who have suffered severe economic loss during the pandemic.” The release noted that he has chaired over 80 congressional hearings on the Chinese Communist Party’s human rights abuses.

The new legislation to “provide justice for victims of foreign state misrepresentation to the World Health Organization, and for other purposes,” was proposed after former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield testified Wednesday that the COVID-19 virus most likely originated at the WIV, concurring with recent reports that the U.S. Dept. of Energy and FBI came to similar independent conclusions.

As reported by Breitbart News, the proposed law would waive certain portions of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. The change would permit American citizens the ability to sue the Chinese Communist Party for “monetary damages, personal injury, death, or damage to or loss of property,” resulting from Beijing’s efforts to hide the viral outbreak from the World Health Organization and the international community, thus allowing it to spread.
