Florida Legislator Introduces Creative New Bill That SHUTS DOWN the Florida Democratic Party – The Justification May Surprise You

A new bill in the Florida legislature is generating controversy. Florida Senate Bill 1248, “The Ultimate Cancel Act,” if signed into law would result in the dissolution of the Florida Democratic Party.

The bill, as reported by WESH-TV, doesn’t mention the Democratic party at any point in its text but would require the Florida Division of Elections to “immediately cancel the filings of a political party, to include its registration and approved status as a political party, if the party’s platform has previously advocated for, or been in support of, slavery or involuntary servitude.”

The bill’s sponsor Republican state Senator Blaise Ingoglia noted, according to the outlet, that the Florida Democratic Party, which was founded in the pre-Civil War era, “adopted pro-slavery positions into their platforms’ during their national conventions in 1840, 1844, 1856, 1860, and 1864.”

In its text, SB 1248 explains, that any current Democrats’ party registration would automatically revert to “no party affiliation.” The new law would even allow the party to reconstitute itself, however, under a wholly different name.

“Any political party canceled pursuant to this subsection may reregister with the department by filing a certificate showing the name of the organization and the names and addresses of its current officers, including the members of its executive committee, accompanied by a completed uniform statewide voter registration application as specified in s. 97.052 for each of its current officers and members of its executive committee which reflects their affiliation with the proposed political party, and a copy of its constitution, bylaws, and rules and regulations.”

Sen. Ingoglia told WESH, “For years now, leftist activists have been trying to ‘cancel’ people and companies for things they have said or done in the past. This includes the removal of statues and memorials and the renaming of buildings. Using this standard, it would be hypocritical not to cancel the Democrat Party itself for the same reason.”

He added, “Some people want to have ‘uncomfortable conversations’ about certain subjects. Let’s have those conversations.”

GOVERNOR DESANTIS PROPOSES SWEEPING NEW POLICIES TO COMBAT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IN FLORIDA

In a statement, the Florida Democratic party made a weak effort to minimize its shameful past and deflected with a counterfactual claim that the proposed bill would “disenfranchise” Florida Democrats.

“Sorry, we don’t base our party’s platform on what happened ~180 years ago. We evolve and grow. Glad to hear you don’t support the insurrectionists who attacked the core of our democracy on Jan 6, though,” they wrote according to FlVoiceNews.

“Presenting a bill that would disenfranchise 5 million voters is both unconstitutional and unserious. Under Ron DeSantis, Senator Ingoglia is using his office to push bills that are nothing more than publicity stunts instead of focusing on the issues that matter most to Floridians, such as reforming property insurance, addressing housing affordability, and combating climate change,” the statement read according to WESH.

The party’s statement even added an ad hominem attack as a kicker: “The sooner DeSantis and his puppets in the legislature learn that Florida is a Democratic Republic and not a Banana Republic, the better it will be for all Floridians.”

In a tweet, Ingoglio tagged the chair of the Florida Democratic party Nikki Fried and quipped, “Florida Dems should be thankful I’m not asking them to return all the money they’ve raised previously from their Jefferson/Jackson Dinners”
