WATCH: House Freedom Caucus Unite Against The Debt Ceiling Deal, Call For Republicans To Revolt Against McCarthy's Proposal - 'This Is A Career-Defining Vote'

The House Freedom Caucus has come out strongly against the recent debt ceiling increase measure, holding a press conference Tuesday morning with numerous representatives imploring their fellow Republicans to vote against the bill.

Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) slammed the agreement, opening by saying, “My colleagues, be very clear, not one Republican should vote for this deal. It is a bad deal.” Rep. Roy has been an outspoken critic of the bill since its announcement sharing numerous different tweets highlighting the shortcomings of the bill.

“No one sent us here to borrow an additional four trillion dollars to get absolutely nothing in return, but at best, if I’m being really generous, a spending freeze for a couple of years. That’s it,” the Lone Star state representative stated. “That’s about what you get, and frankly, you’re gonna make things worse and my Democratic colleagues know it. That’s why they’re supporting it.”

Roy named the numerous Democrats that support the bill as well as the numerous conservative individuals and organizations that have come out against the measure. Rep. Roy also mentioned Donald Trump stating that it would be better to default than reach the deal with Biden.

“At the end of the day, the only person that would default in this town is Joe Biden unless Republicans default on the American dream by voting for this bad bill,” the former chief of staff for Ted Cruz put bluntly. “That is why this group will oppose it. We will continue to fight it today, tomorrow, and no matter what happens, there is going to be a reckoning about what just occurred unless we stop this bill by tomorrow.”
Representative Dan Bishop (R-NC) gave a six-minute speech on the number of effects that this negotiation and agreement will have on the Republican members in the House. “This is a career-defining vote for every Republican,” the Old North state representative proclaimed.

Rep. Bishop described how the majority party in the House has functioned as the dynamic force in Washington and how it has had a positive impact so far. “Imagine the decision of Kevin McCarthy and his negotiators to forfeit that. Imagine that. Why would you give that up? Can you imagine doing it in the middle of a negotiating process without at least putting us all in a room to hash it out,” he explained.

The negotiation between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has largely existed between those two, leaving out others during the process that have just as much of a right to participate. 

“Can you calculate the cost of surrendering that advantage?” Bishop asked, clearly unhappy with the way things have gone. 

The Freedom Caucus has also made it clear that their primary goal right now is to slash the bill and prevent it from proceeding but that they would consider the possibility of issuing a motion to vacate the chair if it proceeded.

It’s unfortunate to see such a divide among Republicans in Congress, but it’s not the side of the Freedom Caucus and dissenters that are at fault. When they excluded important individuals from the negotiation and finished by producing what is at best a lackluster agreement, it’s clear that many wouldn’t be satisfied with the result.
