GOP Scores Major Pro-Life Victory, Overrides Governor's Veto Of Abortion Ban

Governor Roy Cooper (D-NC) failed to thwart the will of the elected legislature by issuing a veto of a 12-week abortion ban which was carried by the Republican supermajority in the state house. The supermajority, born of the blue-red turn of State Rep. Tricia Cotham, allowed both the Senate and State House of Representatives to override Cooper's veto.

The new law passed as "The Care for Women, Children, and Families Act," while allowing for exceptions in rape and incest cases up to 20 weeks of gestation and up to 24 weeks for congenital abnormalities otherwise reduces the timeframe for an abortion to 12 weeks. Fox News reported the bill also requires "an in-person visit with a physician at least 72 hours before an abortion."

According to ABC News, any physician violating the bill will be subjected to discipline by the North Carolina Medical Board up to and including probation, public reprimand, fines, mandatory training, or loss of license.

The outlet further noted that since the overturn of the Roe v. Wade precedent in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization in July fifteen states have "ceased nearly all abortion services." ABC News also cited Florida as potentially becoming the 16th although should the state's current 15-week ban withstand legal challenge and a recently introduced a new six-week ban become law Florida would still allow abortion early in gestation.

The Biden administration denounced the new law in spite of the compromises for rape, incest, and congenital defects with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre calling the bill "dangerous," "out of touch," and "draconian" on Tuesday, according to Fox News.

Jean-Pierre warned, "President Biden and Vice President Harris will continue to work alongside Governor Cooper, state legislators, and Americans who are fighting to protect access to reproductive health care in the face of relentless attacks, and will continue to call on Congress to restore the protections of Roe for all people in every state."
