Former California Governor and Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger called heaven a 'fantasy' this Monday as he expressed profound agnosticism about the afterlife in an interview with fellow actor Danny DeVito.
"It reminds me of Howard Stern’s question to me. 'Tell me, governor, what happens to us when we die?' I said, 'Nothing. You’re 6 feet under. Anyone that tells you something else is a f**king liar,'" Schwarzenegger said, as previously reported by Interview Magazine, addressing DeVito's question about the future of our planet.
“We don’t know what happens with the soul and all this spiritual stuff that I’m not an expert in, but I know that the body as we see each other now, we will never see each other again like that," Schwarzenegger continued. "Except in some fantasy. When people talk about, 'I will see them again in heaven,' it sounds so good, but the reality is that we won’t see each other again after we’re gone. That’s the sad part. I know people feel comfortable with death, but I don’t."
Despite expressing agnosticism, Schwarzenegger holds a position on the question of the afterlife -- that it is in no sense bodily. Indeed, the denial of a thing carries with it the same burden of proof as the affirmation of a thing. But how can he know that there is no future for the body? If he is open to the spiritual, he should be receptive to the existence of a God who sews imperishable bodies out of our perishable "dust" (I Corinthians 15:42). Our bodies without our souls are dead, as Saint James writes (James 2:25). Nonetheless, our souls without our bodies are incomplete, lacking that which they are by nature attached to. Thus, it is fitting for God to render us a new body in conformity with the eternal character of the human spirit -- in conformity with that body, God the Son carries with Him into eternal bliss.
Schwarzenegger added that he appreciates life but realizes he has lost many around him as the years wind on. In turn, DeVito offered his definition of heaven, saying, "To me, heaven is where I put a person who I love dearly, who is kind, who is generous, who made a difference in my life and other people’s lives. I keep them in a spot in my head, like that front row that you have of all of your friends. And you always have a good feeling when you think of them."
In conclusion, Schwarzenegger is dead wrong. Heaven is no fantasy -- it is the next step in God's plan to bring His Kingdom down to earth. Indeed, it is the meeting of the heavens and the earth, and our resurrection signals this new beginning, as Jesus's victory over death is made visible to all.
